Energy Conservation

The University of Kansas has achieved energy savings, along with associated reductions in costs and greenhouse gas emissions, through a number of conservation initiatives, including:
  • Coordinating with the Registrar's Office and Reservations to concentrate summer classes, allowing for HVAC systems to be set back in areas where classes are not scheduled, which resulted in more than $14,000 in savings during Summer 2010.
  • Adjusting building schedules and temperatures at other times of the year when classes are not in session (Winter Recess, Spring Break, semester breaks, etc.) to generate additional energy savings
  • Operating a chilled-water load-shedding program to cycle cooling systems during peak use, saving $50,000 annually in electric costs
  • Installing insulation on the campus-wide steam system, saving over $100,000 annually in natural gas costs
  • Establishing temperature setback points as part of the University of Kansas Energy Policy
  • Implementing $43 million in projects through performance contracting, a practice that allows for investments to be financed through savings on utilities, to generate $3 million in annual energy savings and address campus deferred maintenance.
  • Creating a revolving green loan fund to finance smaller energy efficiency and conservation projects.
  • Establishing a "green fee" that supports student initiatives for renewable energy and energy efficiency.
